Europe's Best Autumn Foliage Train Journeys

Autumn is the quiet season rail travellers keep to themselves. The summer crowds thin out, fares soften, and for a few short weeks the mountains and valleys of Europe turn every shade of gold, amber and rust. A train window is the best seat in the house for it — no traffic, no parking, just the landscape sliding past. Here are six of the most beautiful autumn rail journeys in Europe for 2026, when to catch peak colour, and how to book before the good dates go.

When the colours peak

Autumn foliage doesn't arrive everywhere at once. It sweeps down from the north and from the mountaintops toward the valleys over roughly six weeks. As a rule of thumb for 2026, aim for late September to mid-October in Scandinavia and the high Alps, when larch forests turn butter-yellow, and late October into November for the lower Italian-Swiss valleys and the Mediterranean south. 1. The Vigezzina-Centovalli "Foliage Train"

If you ride only one autumn line, make it this one. The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway has linked Italy and Switzerland since 1923, threading 52 kilometres between Domodossola and Locarno across 83 bridges and through 31 tunnels in just under two hours. Each autumn the operator runs dedicated panoramic "Foliage" services through the wooded Centovalli and Vigezzo valleys, and the reason it's booked out year after year is simple: the chestnut and beech forests here catch fire with colour later than almost anywhere else, so it's the last great autumn ride of the season. Lonely Planet has ranked it among the ten most beautiful railways in the world.

The Foliage trains carry a dated, reserved ticket during peak weeks. Midweek departures are noticeably cheaper and quieter than weekends — in the 2025 season, second-class weekday tickets sat around €36 versus roughly €41 at weekends, though you should confirm the current 2026 fares and timetable on the official Vigezzina-Centovalli site before booking. Domodossola is easy to reach by train from Milan or via the Simplon line, making this a natural add-on to a wider Italian or Swiss trip.

2. Rauma Railway, Norway

Norway's Rauma Line runs between Dombås and Åndalsnes and packs an astonishing amount into a short ride. In autumn the valley walls glow with butterscotch larches and golden silver birches while the train passes the horseshoe Kylling Bridge, plunging waterfalls and Trollveggen — Europe's tallest vertical rock face. It's usually the first of these journeys to peak, from late September, and it pairs beautifully with the better-known Oslo–Bergen line if you're building a longer Nordic loop.

3. Semmering Railway, Austria

A UNESCO World Heritage site and the world's first standard-gauge mountain railway, the Semmering line climbs from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag over a chain of graceful stone viaducts. Come mid-October the surrounding beech forests turn copper and gold, framing the arches perfectly. It's an easy day trip from Vienna, and because it's part of the regular network rather than a private tourist train, an Interrail pass covers the ride.

4. The Bernina Line, Switzerland to Italy

The Bernina crossing is spectacular in any season, but autumn adds a golden foreground to its glaciers and the deep-blue Lago Bianco. Larch stands along the descent toward Poschiavo and Tirano turn vivid yellow in early October, and because the line tops out above 2,250 metres you often get autumn colour below and the first winter snow above in a single window. 5. The Little Yellow Train, France

Le Petit Train Jaune winds high through the French Pyrenees on an open-sided narrow-gauge line, and in autumn the beech and oak slopes around it turn every shade from lemon to deep rust. It's a slow, old-fashioned ride — that's the point — and the elevation means colour lingers here into early November, later than most of France.

6. Rhodope Narrow-Gauge Railway, Bulgaria

For something well off the standard rail-tourist map, Bulgaria's Rhodope narrow-gauge line runs some 125 kilometres through golden beech forests, rolling hills and quiet mountain villages. It's one of the most affordable journeys on this list and among the most peaceful — a reminder that Europe's best autumn rides aren't all in the Alps.

Making the most of an autumn rail trip

Autumn rewards flexibility. Colour timing shifts a week or two each year with the weather, so if your dates are fixed, pick a line with a longer window (the Italian-Swiss valleys and the Pyrenees hold their colour latest). Pack layers — mountain mornings are cold even when the afternoons are bright — and sit on the valley side where you can. Shorter days mean the best light comes early and late, so aim for mid-morning or late-afternoon departures rather than the middle of the day.
