🇩🇪Travelling Germany by Train: ICE, Regional & Deutschlandticket
Germany has one of Europe's most extensive rail networks, operated primarily by Deutsche Bahn (DB). With over 40,000 km of track and a mix of high-speed ICE trains, intercity IC/EC services and an excellent regional network, you can reach virtually every corner of Germany by rail. This guide covers the ticket types, booking tricks and the famous Deutschlandticket.

📱The Deutschlandticket: Everything You Need to Know
- The <strong>Deutschlandticket (D-Ticket)</strong> costs €58/month (2026) and gives unlimited travel on all regional trains, S-Bahns, U-Bahns, buses and trams across Germany.
- <strong>It does NOT cover ICE, IC, or EC trains.</strong> For long-distance journeys (e.g. Hamburg–Munich), you still need a separate DB ticket.
- Buy it via the DB Navigator app, regional transport apps (MVV, HVV, KVB etc.) or at any DB station counter.
- The ticket is valid from the 1st of the month. Cancel by the 10th of the month to avoid the next month's charge.
- <strong>Tourists can buy it too</strong> — there is no residency requirement. At €58 for a month of unlimited regional rail, it is extraordinary value for a multi-city German trip.
🚄Best ICE Routes & Journey Times
- <strong>Berlin → Munich:</strong> ~4h on the high-speed line via Nuremberg. Up to 1 per hour. From €17.90.
- <strong>Frankfurt → Hamburg:</strong> ~3h 45m via Kassel. Frequent service. From €17.90.
- <strong>Cologne → Berlin:</strong> ~4h 20m. From €17.90. Also consider the scenic Rhine Valley IC route.
- <strong>Munich → Hamburg:</strong> ~5h 30m direct or via Frankfurt. Germany's most-travelled long-distance route.
- <strong>Berlin → Hamburg:</strong> ~1h 45m. One of the fastest inter-city connections in Germany.
📲DB Navigator App — Essential Tips
- Download the <strong>DB Navigator app</strong> before your trip — tickets, live departure boards and platform info are all in one place.
- Enable <strong>push notifications</strong> for your booked journeys: you'll get real-time delay alerts and platform changes.
- The app shows <strong>seat occupancy forecasts</strong> (quiet / busy / very busy) so you can choose less crowded trains.
- Check the <strong>"Connections" tab</strong> for all direct and connecting options. For the cheapest Super Sparpreis, always check 90 days ahead exactly.
- Buy a <strong>seat reservation (Sitzplatzreservierung)</strong> for €4.90 when travelling on ICE at peak times — not mandatory but strongly recommended on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
💡Money-Saving Tips for Germany Rail
The Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket (€49 for 1 person, +€8 per extra person up to 5) is valid all day Monday–Friday on all regional trains across Germany — excellent value for day trips. The Bayern-Ticket (€29 for 1 person in Bavaria) works similarly for Bavaria only. Combine these with the Deutschlandticket for a full Germany trip at minimal cost.
