7 Epic Europe Rail Loops for 2026

Updated 11 July 2026 · 8 min read · Itineraries

The best way to see Europe by train in 2026 isn't a straight line — it's a loop. Circular itineraries let you string together five or six cities, cross borders you'd never fly, and end up back where you started with no backtracking. Here are seven rail loops worth planning a trip around this year, with the key legs, indicative 2026 costs, and exactly how to book each one.

Why loops beat one-way trips

A loop turns transport into the holiday. You travel by day through changing landscapes, sleep in a new city most nights, and — crucially for your wallet — get the most out of an Interrail or Eurail Global Pass, which charges by travel day rather than by kilometre. Younger travellers have already worked this out: recent surveys show most people under 35 now prefer the train for any trip under six hours, and 2026's wave of new routes has made looping easier than ever.

1. The Nordic Loop

Copenhagen → Stockholm → Oslo → Bergen → Flåm → Oslo. The showpiece is the Bergen Railway and the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest standard-gauge lines in the world. Long daytime legs, spectacular fjord scenery, and a genuine sense of the far north. Book high-speed and long-distance legs early — Scandinavian advance fares are cheap but sell out.

2. The Central European Circuit

Berlin → Prague → Vienna → Budapest → Vienna → Munich → Berlin. Four capitals, frequent fast EuroCity and Railjet trains, and short hops that keep travel days low. It's the best-value loop for first-timers. Start by pricing Berlin → Munich to see live fares, then build outward.

3. The Mediterranean Crescent

Barcelona → Marseille → Nice → Milan → Venice → (Florence/Rome). Coastline, the Riviera and northern Italy in one arc. Italian high-speed trains (Frecciarossa) and French TGVs need reservations, so lock these in. Compare Rome → Milan and Madrid → Barcelona to gauge Italian and Spanish high-speed pricing.

4. The Alpine Ring

Zürich → Milan → Innsbruck → Munich → Zürich. Short but jaw-dropping — the Gotthard corridor, the Brenner Pass and the edge of the Dolomites. Perfect as a long weekend if you're already in the Alps.

5. The Iberian Loop

Madrid → Barcelona → Valencia → Seville → Madrid on Spain's superb AVE high-speed network. Fast, cheap if booked ahead, and sun-soaked. The Madrid → Barcelona AVE (~2h 30m) is the anchor leg.

6. Benelux + Rhine

Amsterdam → Brussels → Cologne → Frankfurt → Amsterdam. A compact, four-day loop on fast Intercity and ICE trains through the Low Countries and along the Rhine. Start with Amsterdam → Brussels.

7. The Grand Night-Train Loop

Paris → Berlin → Vienna → Venice → Paris, done largely by sleeper. With the Paris–Berlin night train back in service and Nightjet's expanding network, you can cross the continent while you sleep and save on hotels. This is the on-trend loop of 2026 — see our Paris–Berlin night train guide and 2026 night trains overview for the full sleeper map.

Which pass, and how much?

For any loop with three or more long legs, an Interrail/Eurail Global Pass usually wins: about €283 for 4 travel days or €381 for 7 within one month (2nd class, adult; youth 12–27 get roughly 25% off). Add €10–€35 per reservation on high-speed and night trains. For shorter loops (Alpine Ring, Benelux + Rhine), point-to-point advance tickets are often cheaper. Our 10-day Interrail route guide breaks the maths down.

How to book

You can search live times and fares for every leg of these loops right here on EuroRail Times and book your tickets in a few taps — no juggling ten operator websites. Pick your first leg (for example Madrid → Barcelona or Berlin → Munich), check real-time availability, choose your class, and reserve. For passes, buy the Global Pass first, then add paid reservations for the high-speed and night trains on your loop.
