European Christmas Markets by Train 2026: Nuremberg, Vienna & Strasbourg

Updated 15 July 2026 · 13 min read · Seasonal · By the EuroRail Times team

Europe's Christmas markets are made for rail travel — city centres are walkable from the station, you avoid winter flight delays, and you can string together Nuremberg, Vienna, Strasbourg and Cologne in one trip. In 2026, most markets open late November and run through 23 December. Here are the best markets reachable by train, with routes, typical fares and booking tips.

Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt

Germany's most famous market fills the Hauptmarkt with gingerbread (Lebkuchen), mulled wine and hand-carved ornaments. Nürnberg Hbf is a 10-minute walk from the stalls. Arrive via Munich → Nuremberg (ICE/regional, ~1h) or connect from Berlin on ICE via Nuremberg. Book a morning train on weekdays to avoid München commuter crowds.

Vienna Rathausplatz

Vienna's market wraps around the neo-Gothic city hall with ice skating, punch stands and Austrian crafts. Munich → Vienna Railjet takes ~4h; Berlin → Prague → Vienna works as a two-city loop. ÖBB Nightjet runs Vienna–Hamburg and Vienna–Zurich if you want to chain markets overnight.

Strasbourg — Capital of Christmas

Strasbourg claims 300+ stalls across the Grande Île (UNESCO). The TGV from Paris Gare de l'Est takes ~1h 50m. Combine with Paris → Strasbourg for a long weekend, or continue to Basel and Zurich on regional trains. Alsace villages (Colmar, Riquewihr) are day-trip bus rides from Strasbourg station.

Cologne & the Rhine

Seven markets ring Cologne Cathedral — the largest is beside the Dom itself. Amsterdam → Cologne (Thalys/ICE, ~2h 40m) and Berlin → Frankfurt → Cologne are the main corridors. Pair with Düsseldorf or Aachen markets on a Rhine weekend.

Multi-market rail loops

Central Europe loop (5 days): Munich → Nuremberg (day 1) → Prague (day 2–3) → Vienna (day 4–5). All legs have frequent daytime trains; Prague–Vienna Railjet is ~4h.

Franco-German loop (4 days): Paris → Strasbourg → Cologne → Amsterdam. Use TGV/ICE throughout; one-way fares from €25–45 per leg if booked early.

For night-train connections between loops, see our new night trains 2026 guide and Paris–Berlin sleeper guide.

Pro tip: Book Friday outbound and Sunday return trains 6–8 weeks ahead — December weekend ICE and TGV services sell out fast.
