🛏️When couchette vs sleeper
Couchette ≠ sleeper. Couchette = shared bunks (4/6) with bedding; sleeper = private cabin with real beds. Pick by privacy need, party size, and total trip cost — not the label alone.
| Choose | When it wins | Skip when |
|---|---|---|
| Couchette | Solo/budget/group of 4–6 · Sparschiene open · hotel night saved is the goal | You need a door and quiet sleep · travelling with a toddler who needs privacy |
| Sleeper | Couples · light sleepers · long hauls (Vienna–Paris / Vienna–Amsterdam) · work next morning | Price gap to couchette is 2×+ and you only need “a bed somewhere” |
| New Gen Mini Cabin | Solo privacy without full sleeper price — see Nightjet New Generation | Route still on classic stock (check cabin dossier + open date) |
📅When to Book Night Train Tickets
- ÖBB Nightjet: Tickets open 180 days in advance at oebb.at. The cheapest couchette "Sparschiene" fares (€29–€49) appear on opening day and sell very fast for popular routes — especially Vienna–Paris.
- SNCF night trains: Open at 90 days. Book at sncf-connect.com or via All Aboard.
- With an Interrail/Eurail pass: You still need a berth reservation. Couchette reservation with pass is typically €9–€29 (vs €49–€99 without). Book reservations early — pass-quota berths are limited. See pass vs point-to-point · passes hub.
- Last-minute: A few berths are released 3–5 days before departure on oebb.at "Last Minute" section. Useful for spontaneous travellers, but not reliable for popular summer routes.
🎒What to Expect On Board
- Couchette compartments are shared — you'll sleep alongside strangers in the same gender-neutral space (some routes offer gender-specific booking).
- Bedding (pillow, blanket, sheet) is always included in couchette and sleeper prices.
- There is a bistro/dining car on most routes for late-night snacks and drinks.
- Sleeper cabins include breakfast delivered to your door on most ÖBB routes.
- Security: Use the provided lock or your own padlock on couchette compartment doors. Nightjet has no reported serious security issues — standard travel awareness applies.
- Noise: Expect the train to stop at intermediate stations during the night. Light sleepers should bring earplugs.

Booking tips
Open sales as soon as quotas appear (often ~180 days for Nightjet). Couchettes sell first on Vienna–Paris and Zurich–Berlin. Search day connections on EuroRail Times, then lock the berth early.
Price tips
Sparschiene couchettes from ~€49 beat last-minute sleepers. Pass holders still pay a reservation — book the pass quota immediately. Compare total cost vs flight + hotel.
